DMD2 App (22)

Category: DMD2 App

Map updates are pushed ever two months.  However, to ensure no loss of navigation ability while using the system, there is no automatic map update in DMD2.  You will be notified of map updates by the Map Layer icon on the “Map View” page displaying, in green, the number of available updates as a number.  To trigger the update, you must manually enter the “Map Layer”, go to download maps, the respective region and selecting and updating each individual map.

A data connection is required for the map update.

Once you have started a map update, the map being updates is no longer available until the update is complete.

No. These are streaming devices, which means it will be your pocket device streaming the app.

Not only you are limited by the fact you need an AA or CP compatible app but also by the AA/CP version of the app, AA/CP app versions are not the same as when you run the app natively, you usually get a stripped down version of the app where A LOT of its features are missing and they use totally different and limited UIs.

Although this system might be useful in your car or even on a motorcycle if your doing single day shorter rides, this is not a good solution for adventure riding. In addition, your streaming device (your phone) will discharge much faster, you will not be able to use handlebar remotes and, the DMD2 application will certainly not work.

Yes, the Play Store version of DMD2, when you buy in-app purchases / subscriptions, they will be available on all your devices that are running the same Play Store account.

The default home launcher is the app which is shown when your device first starts or when you press the home button.

Some users want their devices to behave more like a traditional Android device, with a regular launcher where they can launch any app including DMD2. Other users will use the tablet mostly on their motorcycles and want DMD2 to be the default home app.

Whatever you prefer, notice that, you can always change this at any time. Check the video bellow to see how:

There are two common causes for map downloads:

The WiFi connection is slow and/or unstable.  In this situation it is recommended to priorities which maps to download or update and do these one at a time.  Typically the download will complete but it can take a long time depending on the quality of the connection.

Insufficient space or memory on your device. In this situation delete maps and/or GPX Tracks/Routes which are no longer needed.

DMD2 includes both place searching using the online Google Places API and place search using the offline map database!

The place search dialog include the following options:

If you are just looking for the closest POI of a specific category, then just tap on the icon for that category, the offline category listing will display a list of the closest places matching that category. Notice that you can scroll the categories and there is one for Town/City/Village too.

If you are searching for a specific POI name then use the Offline search, it should find what you are looking for.

If you are searching for a full address, with street name, number and postal code, then you need to be online and use the Online Search – this uses the full power of Google Places (the best place API) and can find based on address or name.

To export a recording (GPX file) you simply need to go to GPX Recorder > Recordings > select the recording from the list and press Share.

When you share the file, Android will show you all the installed apps to where you can share it, usually you would select something like Google Drive to store it online, but you can also select your email app if you want to send it by email to someone or even select an instant messaging app if you are sharing it in a chat.

In DMD2 you can go to Global Settings (cog wheel button in the bottom menu) and perform a Backup and Restore.

Tap on “Create Zip and Save” to generate a zip file with all your data and save it, we recommend sending it to Google Drive.

To restore use the “Import Zip and Restore”, it allows you to select your backup zip file to restore, including from Google Drive.

You can use this between different devices.

The only data which is not included is the offline map files, they are too big.

The best way is to close DMD2 and clear the app storage, this will erase everything and it will be like you are running DMD2 for the first time:

For DMD2 devices or devices using the DMD APK:

Depending on the settings selected in Global Settings, updates by default, will start up automatically when the devices is connected to the internet.
Notice that in global settings you can change the update check settings to:

  • Check for updates automatically – This will use the current available network connection to check for updates on start up and, if the connection is maintained, when an update made available. If disabled DMD2 will only check for updates when you manually tap on “Check for updates now!” option.
  • Check for updates on WiFi only – This will only check for updates when there is a WiFi connection.  This check will occur at start up and, if the WiFi connection is maintained, when an update made available
  • Check for updates now! – This will force a manual check of the server to determine if there are outstanding updates. An internet connection is required to access and complete updates.

Other devices using DMD2 sourced from the Google PlayStore:

DMD2 receives updates as per other apps via the Google PlayStore  update process. An internet connection is required to access and complete updates.

The Track Progress on the left side of the map view shows automatically (if enabled) if you are on top, or close to a GPX Track Line.

The information available for this box is:

Track Progress -> Track name / ETA / Distance to Finish
Distance to POIs -> User selectable (up to 3) POI categories to show along the track line
Next Waypoint -> Next Waypoint Name / Distance -> If there is any on the GPX file and close to the current track

If you are on top of a track line and you cannot see this box check the following:

To enable the POIs along the track:

  • Click “GPX” button in map view
  • Click “Settings” in the bottom of the dialog
  • Set it up under “Auto Find POIs”

This is possible only for DMD Navigation devices (tablet or phone).

To use an SD Card just insert it on the device, format it as Removable Storage (not expanded internal memory), start DMD2, go to Global Settings (cog wheel button in the bottom menu) and search for the option “Set Storage to Removable SD Card”.

DMD2 dialogs are made to be easy to use while riding and with gloves, they usually are big and take most of the screen space.

We get asked often how to view the locations / tracks / waypoints from the listings while using the dialogs, for this we already have a function that makes the dialog take half space in the screen.

Tap the “minimise” button on the top right corner of the dialog:

Also, if you want the last position to be remembers, to make the map not move back to your current location, then disable follow location before using the dialog:

Ensure the “Arrow” on the top left of the Map View screen looks like a compass needle or a filled in white arrow.

Compass Mode – Map follows location and rotates to face travel direction.
Filled White Arrow – Map follows location but will not rotate, top is north.

Notice: Ensure you are travelling at more than 4 kph or 2.5 mph.

The only follow mode where the map will NOT MOVE – follow mode disabled – is when the button shows an empty arrow icon, use any other mode for the map to track your location:

Users often confuse saving a location with a “waypoint”, in DMD2 a user location can be stored and made visible on the map. This should not be confused with adding a waypoint to an ongoing GPX recording which will be added to the GPX file once the recording is finished and the file saved.

The way you save location and view them on the map is through the PLACE SEARCH dialog (the magnifying glass button in the map view).

Steps to save a location:

  • Tap and hold anywhere on the map to start the “Map Long Press Actions” dialog
  • Now tap on “Save Location” button
  • Fill in your location information (icon, name, description)
  • You can choose to enable the “Keep visible on map” toggle -> this will make the location icon always visible on the map

The bottom menu bar will disappear for two (2) reasons:

The screen is locked using the lock icon.  Unlock the screen to display the bottom menu.

If you have touched or tapped the top status bar.  Re touch/tap the top status bar to display the bottom menu.

This indicates how much free memory is available.  For example if it shows 90%, it means that 90% of the available memory is free, which is very good!

The APK install is not limited by Google Play Store policy restrictions.
The APK version allows DMD2 to run in the background when you go from DMD2 to another app, this allows DMD2 to keep recording a track in the background and increment the trip values.

You should notice that the Play Store in-app purchases and subscriptions are multi-device, they will be available on all your devices with the same Play Store account.

The APK version requires licenses that can be purchased in the Thork Racing website, these licenses are per-device, only one device per license. Also notice that the map license will be more expensive because it is a lifetime license and not a subscription model like the Play Store version.

To download the APK version and view the instructions about how to license it please check this page.

There is a lot of confusion about GPX files. You should understand that the content of a GPX file can be:
– TRACKS – Point by point drawn on the map, no turn by turn instructions, you follow the line, there is no calculation done, the track stays the exact same no matter where you load it
– ROUTES – Points with the places you want to go through, the app will calculate a route to take through all those points, it has turn by turn instructions and you can change the calculation profile
– WAYPOINTS – Pins / Indications on the map – Informative icons on the map with alerts, places to stop, fuel, whatever you want

Updates from the Google PlayStore only work when DMD2 was purchased and downloaded from the PlayStore.  If the device is a DMD Navigation unit or, you have installed the DMD2 APK version, updates are pushed automatically.  Do not use the PlayStore for updates.

Go to the global settings view (cog wheel in the bottom menu) and scroll to the bottom, there you will find “DMD2 Version”.

For the foreseeable future, no.  Development of a feature rich application like DMD2 is significantly more difficult in the iOS environment.  Additionally, as most Apple devices are not ideally suited for motorcycle activity particularly when it comes to GPS accuracy, and dust, water, vibration and temperature resistance and protection.

By default when you plug our devices to a PC it will only charge the device.
If you want to access the device files from the PC you need to enable File Transfer in the device settings.

To do this you can check this video:

– Swipe down from the top of your screen
– Tap on the notification that says “Charging this device via USB”
– In the USB Preferences enable “Use USB for – File Transfer”

Please noticed that all our remotes can be connected using Bluetooth! But if you want to have it connected by cable you need to have the 12V power supply since the box handles power and communications!

The easiest remote to connect by cable is the Remote 2 since it includes a splitter cable that makes it plug and play. Other remotes like the Remote1 and Remote2 can be used but require you to manually connect them to the open wires. This is covered on the device manual.

The ideal setup is the T665 with 12V power supply and Remote 2:

The T865 and 665 ship with a simple peel plastic protection screen.  This should be removed after the initial setup. Never install any protector on top of it.

Additional better or with different finish type might be available for sale, check the Thork Racing shop.

For the T865 there is a small hole in the LCD bezel bottom left area, you can use this to remove any installed screen protector.

We release Firmware updates very often and there are two types of updates.

Firmware Update – Full system update that either update the Android version or contains OS level improvements and the latest security patches.
Configuration Download – Includes the latest versions of all our system apps, settings, APIs and other small bits.

Both will generate notifications and there are two types of notifications that allow you to perform the update with a single click.

1 – Persistent notification in the Android notifications area, tap on it to start update:

2- If you miss that notification and start DMD2 you will also see a notification in DMD2:

You can assign the functions of these buttons using the Buttons app which is a system app installed on all our devices?

Tag: How-To
Category: Navigation Devices

In short yes. Internet connectivity is only needed to conduct online search for addresses, etc, download maps and GPX data and conduct updates. Otherwise it can remain offline and fully functional.

Category: Navigation Devices

This is not uncommon and is due to the screen being activated by water or dust. Using the Buttons App (a system app available on all our devices), configure a hardware button to enable/disable screen touch. When riding in the rain or on very dusty places lock the screen touch!

The SD Card should NEVER be formatted as “Expand Internal Memory”

Only format the SD Card as “Removable Storage”

Android just handles SD Card management terribly and reviewing the Google boards it appears no one is interested in solving this.

A huge number of DMD2 users formatted their SD Cards as “Expand Internal Memory” and then also enabled the “Use SD Card for Storage” option under the DMD2 General Settings.   However, this “Use SD Card for Storage” option is only for SD Cards formatted as “Removable Storage”.

If you need to reset the DMD2 app and SD Card you can follow these steps:

All these apps are part of the device system applications, but only for DMD2 devices. If you have a DMD Navigation devices and you cannot find these apps or DMD2 pre-installed please contact support, we can easily fix it with a remote FW update push.
