I am running a T865 in the 2025 Scooter Cannonball in June. My wife will be driving a cargo van as a support vehicle. Would it be practical to run a second DMD device in the van and create a group ride so she can track my position? The van will likely be 50+ miles away at any given time.
I think that’s possible; the distance should not be a problem

I guess all devices in the group would need to have a SIM card installed?

…or for each device, a WiFi connection to the own mobile phone which is running a “private hotspot”.
Navigation can be in offline modus, but group ride data must be transferred in anyway. Therefore the online Modus.

Oh, right. Forgot about tethering to the phone. I think because, even tho I discovered how to do that when I first got my tablet, I’ve pretty much decided not to deal with the phone management issues. Think I’m going to opt for putting a SIM card in mine, especially if I can get the same $25 a month plan for it that I have with my phone.
Phone management issues would be easier for your wife in the support van than they would be on the bike.
My 865 has a SIM. I’d get one for the van, as well. The difficult thing right now is finding an appropriate device given that uncertainty with tariffs has created a shortage of devices in the US. I have a ‘teammate’ on the ride, too. So, ideally, the van would want to see where we both are.
Edit: I ordered a Samsung Tab Active5 for the van.
